Almost a decade in Bengaluru and five years into their blissful marriage, Abhijit and Payal, who hail from Kolkata, decided to get their home designed by Livspace. With very basic and minimal requirements like classic interiors and more free space for their child to run around, they met our team at the Experience Centre.

Their designer Lavanya, describes them as one of the sweetest clients she has worked with. She proceeded to design a home that is awash with pretty neutrals and is a relatively easy to maintain. Sometimes all you need is an understanding client, who is open to the designer’s ideas and you get a marvel in return. Take a tour with us and discover the 7 reasons why we love this home.

A Practical Foyer

Payal and Abhijit were very specific about having a dedicated foyer, even though they did not have a dedicated space for it. Thus, Lavanya has given a mid-tall unit in the entryway, which houses the UPS and shoes, and a seat beside it that they can use to sit comfortably while heading in or out. The wall opposite it has been accentuated by a wallpaper, while niches decorate the extended wall to the left. This is painting a pretty picture in our minds already!

A Neutral Drawing Room

The wonderful interplay of natural and artificial lighting is visible in this simple living room. While ready-to-sink-in beige sofas take centre stage here, the sheer drapery adds warmth. The TV unit is a corner unit that merges with the crockery-cum-pooja unit. It’s a solution that saves space and looks streamlined. Topped with a simple overhead ledge, and drawers and shutters beneath, this TV unit is as simple as it gets.

A dining in wood and white

In conversation, Lavanya tells us that the couple was keen on adding mood lighting in the dining area. Thus, she has added false ceiling with lights that create a serene ambience. Since the dining table was retained from their previous home, we reupholstered the chairs to add an interesting dimension to the room.

Attractive Multi-purpose Unit

The crockery unit features a built-in pooja cabinet with an intricate jaali door to give it an aesthetic look. Since the couple is very particular about the pooja corner and utensils being used for the deities, Lavanya combined both solutions. White and wood come out to play with in this one and makes for a super organised unit. The open cavity can also act as a serving counter when guests come over!

Snazzy Space to Cook

Lavanya describes this kitchen as a wonder in terms of functionality in a compact space. She has busted the myth that white kitchens are difficult to maintain by giving the couple a membrane finish white kitchen with red accents. To highlight the cooktop area, she uses bright red in the cabinets and backsplash tiles. “Lighting was something that Payal kept stressing on, therefore, I have given under task lights under the overhead cabinets to make things easier,” said the designer.

An Adaptive Kids Room

Abhicray is all of three years old right now and like all other kids, his needs will also change. Hence, Lavanya has given the kid a very happy and colour filled room, but just for now. How is that possible, you ask? If you look carefully, the wardrobe is a neutral colour, with fun stickers that are easily removable. The myriad hues on the drawers are also just stick ons that can be removed when he grows up. The ocean-themed wallpaper makes things bright and interesting.

Dark Chocolate Dreams

The master bedroom has certain striking features you will lay your eyes on as you enter. One is the groovy wallpaper with a flash of Payal’s favourite turquoise colour reflecting in it. The other is the chocolate brown colour that flanks the wallpaper, to match the wooden undertones of this room. Sliding wardrobes make sure that space does not get cramped with hinged counterparts. Visual continuity is maintained with the niche that Lavanya has turned into a tiny study area. It also comes with a desktop for times when they want to work from home.

“Payal and Abhijit were one of the sweetest couples to work with. They were very open to new ideas and gave me complete freedom to design their home. We never had any disparities with the colours, decor or any other design decision. I simple enjoyed working for this humble couple.”
